Known as `the pearl of the Sahel`, Sousse lies on the eastern coast of Tunisia with the harbour area dating back 2500 years. Of course much has changed in and around the area since and today Sousse is probably more vibrant than any other holiday resort in Tunisia. The medina offers many small shops in the cobbled streets and alleyways and it is a popular holiday destination for both Europeans and Tunisians alike.
The fantastic white sandy beach of Boujaffar stretches all the way through Sousse and onto Port el Kantaoui, which is 10km (6 miles) away. Most of it is open to the public, although some areas are private for the hotels. There are many historical attractions in Sousse including the 9th century Great Mosque, 8th century ribat (fortress), the Archaeological Museum and the Avenue des Catacombes, which are 3.5 miles of tunnels under the city. There are several bars and nightclubs in Sousse and plenty of restaurants on the beach and in the town.
