Located on the south-west coast of the Algarve, between Lagos and Potimao, Alvor is a beautiful, traditional resort that faces a natural lagoon, meaning warm, calm sea.
The main Torralta Beach is a 4 mile stretch of gorgeous soft sand, backed by sand dunes, and other smaller beaches, such as Praia do Vau, Praia dos Tres Irmaos and Praia da Rocha are also beautiful with sandstone cliffs and rock formations offering shelter at either end.
Out of season the Alvor weather can reach 20°, and the mid to late 20`s during the summer months, just right for sunbathing and swimming in the crystal clear sea. A good selection of water sports are available in Alvor, as well as plenty of on land activities for the more active holiday makers.
After the 18th century earthquake the church, in Alvor old town, was restored to it`s former glory and the maze of cobbled streets around it are wonderful for exploring and searching for good, cheap holiday souvenirs in the craft shops.
Alvor holidays must include a visit to the quayside restaurants, to sample the delicious freshly caught, fish dishes on offer, from grilled sardines and shellfish to fish stews. Local and international cuisine is also plentiful, making sure that all tastes are accounted for.
Although there are many bars and restaurants, as well as a disco, in Alvor, nightlife is fairly laidback, so head to nearby Praia da Rocha for a wider choice and also a trip to the casino.
