The traditional Greek village of Gournes lies 15km east of Heraklion and makes a great base from where to explore the capital, as well as a number of ancient sites within the vicinity. It is a popular holiday choice for couples and families alike, looking for some great beaches and a good choice of tavernas and bars.
The temperature in Gournes can range between 16-21° out of season and 24-29° during the summer season, perfect for sunbathing on the beaches, or swimming in the shallow sea. While there are a good number of eateries and establishments in Gournes, it has still managed to retain it`s laidback, traditional vibe. Lining the lovely, narrow streets of the old village are many tavernas and cafes, offering local cuisine and international dishes, as well small souvenir shops selling holiday gifts. The beach road also has a good number of bars, discos and tavernas providing evening entertainment, although Gournes is not noted as a lively resort. Supermarkets in Gournes can provide you with those holiday essentials, but if you fancy a full day browsing boutiques and shops then just hop on a bus to Rethymnon or Heraklion.
